JDPM Oyo Participates in Misereor Workshop on Human Rights and Gender Issues

From May 12–16, 2025, Misereor organized a Workshop on Human Rights and Gender Issues at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Abuja. The workshop brought together participants from across the country to deepen understanding of human rights, gender equality, and leadership within the context of development work.
The Justice, Development and Peace Movement (JDPM) of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo was ably represented by two staff members from the Department of Politics and Human Rights.
Key topics discussed included Human Rights, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV)—its root causes, relevant Nigerian laws, international frameworks, and conventions protecting women and girls—Women’s Rights and Law, Governance and Women in Politics, and Impactful Leadership.
The workshop emphasized the need for organizations to:
• Develop Gender Policies and Safeguarding Policies to protect vulnerable groups.
• Establish clear response strategies for survivors of gender-based violence.
• Strengthen stakeholder mapping to ensure effective referral and collaboration.
• Organize community sensitization sessions and involve religious and community leaders.
• Promote self-care and peer support among development workers.
Lessons Learned
Participants highlighted that SGBV affects every sector of community life, impacting staff, farmers, traders, transporters, students, teachers, and religious leaders alike. Hence, every department of JDPM must mainstream gender and SGBV prevention into its programs.
The sessions also reinforced that leadership demands responsibility, humility, and collaboration. Leaders are encouraged to adopt servant leadership styles, remain proactive, and prioritize the well-being of team members.
